What Is It?

Cinnamon has a rich history as a spice in Asia, as well as in traditional Indian and Chinese medicine, where it is known for its antimicrobial, antioxidant, antifungal and anti-inflammatory benefits. In addition to its rich history, a modern meta-analysis published in 2011 in the Journal of Medicinal Food concluded that cinnamon lowers fasting blood glucose - which is good news for those with diabetes or prediabetes conditions.

It is important to know there are 2 main types of cinnamon – Ceylon Cinnamon and Cassia Cinnamon. Both are considered healthy, but Cassia cinnamon has much higher levels of a harmful toxin (coumarin) where if you eat too much of it, it may cause liver toxicity, damage and even increase your risk of certain cancers. Coumarin is also a natural anticoagulant. Hence we recommend consuming Ceylon Cinnamon, or known as the ‘true’ cinnamon  – a little pricier but safer for health. Ceylon cinnamon also tastes sweeter, lighter and more refined than Cassia – this makes Ceylon cinnamon a great flavouring ingredient for desserts.

Aside from its powerful antimicrobial, antioxidant, antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties, Ceylon cinnamon is also known to help with heart health. According to a study, cinnamon can help reduce several common risk factors of heart disease such as high cholesterol levels and high triglyceride levels. Additionally, cinnamon is reported to also help protect against neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease.

Ceylon cinnamon can do wonders for your cooking as it can help sweeten your recipes without using sugar. Using cinnamon in food can help curb the amount of sugar you normally add thus cutting down on the glycemic load of your meal. A study has also cited that cinnamon’s antibacterial and antioxidant properties enable it to be used as a natural preservative for food – hindering mold growth so food can stay fresh longer without the use of chemicals or artificial ingredients.
