What Is It?
The Cacao (pronounced KA-COW) tree is the source of all things chocolate. Ancient Mayan and Aztecs believed that Cacao was a gift from the gods as a divine food with medicinal and aphrodisiacal properties. The scientific name Theobroma cacao literally means "food of the gods" in Greek.

Raw cacao (not processed chocolate like your usual dark chocolate bar) is reported to be one of the top antioxidant superfoods in the world. It has even more antioxidants (by a few times) than popular foods commonly touted as being antioxidant-rich such as red wine, green tea or blueberries. The phytonutrients that give raw cacoa powder its high antioxidant value are a group of compounds called polyphenols or more specifically flavonoids. Raw Cacao has more flavonoids than any known food. Two flavonoids in particular, catechin and epicatchin, are found in very high amounts in raw cacao powder.
